Saturday, October 5th

Reclaiming Community Practices: From Fashion Industry to Fashion Commons by Global Fashioning Assembly, Fashion Act Now and OurCommon.Market.

The event will feature presentations from various speakers, including Sara Arnold from OurCommon.Market, who will introduce the concept of degrowth, followed by insights on localized clothing and textile cultures from Elise van der Laan, Kavita Parmar, Ivana Biocina, and Milja Vukovic. Ruth Ogier will provide a global perspective on how to downscale European industry without negatively impacting those dependent on it, while Karishma Kelsey and Ashish Kothari will discuss radical alternatives in fashion. The session will address contentious issues and foster collaboration toward creating the Fashion Commons as an alternative to Big Fashion. Following the presentations, the GFA Sharing Council will allow you to reflect on the discussions in an inclusive setting, and the event will conclude with an Assembly for a Fashion Commons, where you will collaboratively integrate ideas and establish a foundation for future cooperation.

Join Slow Stitch Sundayz, a mindful creative workshop led by Buffy, where stitching becomes a meditative practice that nurtures self-expression and confidence. Open to all, regardless of experience, you will be able to explore slow stitching techniques through weekly prompts or work on their own projects. This inclusive space fosters connection among creatives, sharing stories, sewing tips, and style inspirations. Recommended materials include basic sewing tools like scissors, needles, fabric, and thread, but participants without sewing supplies are encouraged to bring sketchpads or other art materials to explore creativity in their own way.

Fighting fascism through fashion, hacking white supremacy by Global Fashioning Assembly 

The Austrian Center for Fashion Research, in collaboration with the “Fashion and the Far Right: The New Complexity in Style” initiative at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, invites you to provoke change through a workshop aimed at countering the rise of far-right extremism globally. Acknowledging the weaponization of fashion in promoting hate and violence, this workshop will encourage creative resistance against fascist ideologies by designing visual counter-narratives. You will be ale to collaboratively develop strategies to combat authoritarianism and promote global and racial justice through various forms of expression, including handmade fashion hacks, counter-images, videos, and memes. You are also encouraged to bring materials for creative deconstruction, such as fabric, old clothes, and digital tools, to engage in activities like drawing, sewing, and collaging, all in the fight against fascism.

Lowlands Decolonial Fashion Network (LDFN) - GFA 24 by Global Fashioning Assembly  

The Lowlands Decolonial Fashion Network (LDFN), comprising FashionClash, the Linen Project, the Dutch Crafts Council, Tailors & Wearers, and the Research Collective for Decoloniality & Fashion, invites you to engage in a conversation about the meaning of decoloniality within a Dutch context. Through a decolonial lens, this event will explore four key subtopics—fashion, cultural heritage, crafts, and natural resources/local knowledge. The gathering will accommodate 40 in-person attendees at the Jan van Eyck Academie in Maastricht, while others can join the discussion online. You are encouraged to reflect on these themes and contribute to the conversation in both Dutch and English.

WOE, Design Magic Through Craft: Textile Alchemy, GFA24 by Global Fashioning Assembly 

The Witches of the East Collective, a non-profit ecofeminist design group consisting of six Turkish women, aims to mend the relationship between humans and nature through ethical, circular, and slow design practices. As upcyclers, biodesigners, farmers, ethical foragers, and eco-printers, they utilize textiles, clothing, and living organisms to foster interconnected and collaborative ways of living. Their mission focuses on repairing, caring for, and reforming the colonialist and patriarchal structures in the fashion industry by producing multidisciplinary works that encompass fashion, materials, methods, and knowledge. As part of their involvement in GFA24, they will host an online event exploring "sympoetic fashion praxis," centering on the theme of displacement, which encompasses issues like natural disasters, climate crises, migration, biodiversity loss, and the growing waste in textiles and food.

CIMO, a nonprofit organization based in Zagreb, Croatia, focuses on researching the theoretical and creative dimensions of fashion and clothing within contemporary visual culture. For GFA24, CIMO will explore the concept of soft arts and the significance of softness in designer and artistic practices that utilize soft materials. By examining the relationships between textiles and the body, politics, and performance, the project positions softness as a radical alternative to traditional, rigid art and fashion systems. As part of their BoSA - Briefing on Soft Arts initiative, artist Marielle MacLeman will explore the cultural and industrial heritage of textiles and clothing in Croatia and Ireland, highlighting the often-overlooked contributions of female needlework and the historical and contemporary relevance of local weaving and cottage industries in both regions.

Fashion + Urban Art: an Angolan Decolonial Performance by Global Fashioning Assembly 

The Mweno Decolonial Fashion + Art Collective promotes cultural, historical, and artistic diversity within Angolan Fashion and Art. At GFA 2024, the collective will host an open-day event showcasing the creative works of AfroAsy by Dey Tchissapa, Av X DressCode, Gato Preto, and Marca Buala. The exhibition will feature photographs, video art, graphite, and a catwalk performance, all designed to introduce and share decolonizing principles with the creative community. The event will primarily be conducted in Portuguese, providing an immersive experience in Angolan artistic expression.
