Becoming involved in a sustainable fashion platform has never been easier. Insight of COVID-19, outreach and events has become primarily based online. Anyone with access to a computer and the internet can become involved in advocating for solutions in the fashion industry. This is important when fast fashion is overproducing goods at the cost of the health of Earth and all its living inhabitants
Slow Fashion Chicago
Slow Fashion Chicago is a local team of Slow Fashion Movement powered by The Green Wave. It aims in using fashion as a powerful tool for change. As a local team, that means working with the Chicago community to create more sustainable approaches to fashion. The goal is to accomplish BIG action, which involves addressing the need for policy success, organizing local events and creating a network of like-minded people to work together. Anyone in the Chicago-land area is welcome to join. Leadership opportunities include becoming an event organizer, community organizer, content creator, editorial manager, graphic designer and digital illustrator. Remake
Remake is a nonprofit organization that aims in making fashion a force for good. It is made up of a community of designers, IG addicts, feminists, storytellers and fashion lovers. They aim in using their purchasing power, creativity and voice to amplify the invisible women in the fashion industry. This means being committed in quitting fast fashion and pledging to buy better clothing to respect the earth and women. Anyone interested in supporting sustainable fashion is welcome to apply to become a Remake Ambassador. You will represent your respective region, such as the Midwest. This is a low commitment opportunity to become immersed in a like-minded community invested in making the fashion industry better. Further leadership opportunities include becoming a community organizer and writer for their blog. Threaded
Threaded is a locally-based community dedicated to driving change in the fashion industry. They share stories of changemakers, create space for conversations around ethics and sustainability, create collaborative events and highlight local brands and resources. If you are interested in supporting local, sustainable and ethical fashion, consider reviewing their directory of Midwest and Central US designers, artists, stylists, brands, pattern-makers, influencers, vintage-lover and activists who are creating change in the fashion industry. Conscious Closet Club
The Chicago Conscious Closet Club is a community of Chicagoans interested in ethical fashion. Outreach and events are hosted by Chicago Fair Trade and their events and posts are inspired by Elizabeth Cline’s The Conscious Closet book. Extinction Rebellion Chicago
This local chapter of Extinction Rebellion is part of a do-it-together movement that uses non-violent civil disobedience to help stop mass extinction and the risk of social collapse. XR Chicago’s mission is to spark and sustain a spirit of creative rebellion that will bring about change socially, economically and politically. This is urgent in midst of a climate crisis.
